If you’ve got a room in your Jacksonville home that never gets cool — a garage you’re trying to work in, a Florida room that turns into an oven by noon, a converted attic, an addition your ductwork never reached — a ductless mini split solves it without tearing your house apart. Langston’s Heating & Air installs and services ductless mini split systems across Jacksonville and Northeast Florida. We’re locally owned, we answer our own phone, and we’ll tell you honestly whether a mini split is the right call for your space or whether you’d be better off fixing the ductwork you already have.

What a ductless mini split actually is
A mini split has two parts: a compact outdoor condenser and one or more slim indoor units mounted high on a wall, in a ceiling cassette, or as a low-profile floor unit. They’re connected by a small line set that only needs a three-inch hole through the wall. No ducts, no soffits, no dropped ceilings.
Because there’s no ductwork, you’re not losing 20–30% of your cooling to leaks in a hot attic — which is exactly where most Jacksonville duct runs live. Each indoor unit has its own thermostat, so you cool the room you’re actually in instead of the whole house.
When a mini split is the right answer in a Jacksonville home

Your garage. The single most common reason people call us about mini splits. If you’re working out there, running a shop, or just tired of a 100°+ garage in July, a single-zone mini split handles it. Just be honest with us about insulation — an uninsulated garage door will fight the system.
A Florida room, sunroom, or enclosed porch. These rooms have the most glass and the least insulation in the house. Tying them into your main system usually just makes the rest of the house uncomfortable. A dedicated zone is the fix.
An addition or converted space. Bonus room over the garage, converted attic, in-law suite, converted carport. If your existing system was sized for the original square footage, adding load to it shortens its life.
One room that’s always 5 degrees off. Before we sell you anything, we’ll check whether it’s a duct problem, an airflow problem, or a return-air problem. Sometimes the answer is a $200 repair, not a new system. We’d rather tell you that.
A detached structure. Workshop, garage apartment, studio, pool house. Running ductwork out there isn’t practical.
Replacing window units. Quieter, far more efficient, doesn’t block a window, and doesn’t get stolen.
Mini splits and Jacksonville humidity — the part most people get wrong
Cooling is the easy half of the job here. Moisture is the hard half.
An oversized mini split will cool a room fast, shut off, and never run long enough to pull humidity out of the air. You end up with a room that’s 72 degrees and clammy — and eventually, mold on the walls. This is the most common mistake we’re called out to fix on mini splits installed by someone else.
The fix is correct sizing based on an actual load calculation for your space — square footage, ceiling height, insulation, window area and orientation, and how much sun that wall takes. Not a guess off a chart. A properly sized inverter mini split runs at low speed most of the day, which is exactly what strips humidity out of Northeast Florida air.
If you’re near the water in Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, or Jax Beach, ask us about corrosion-resistant coastal coil coatings on the outdoor unit. Salt air eats standard condensers, and the upgrade is cheap compared to replacing a unit early.
You may qualify for a $200 JEA rebate
JEA offers a $200 rebate on ENERGY STAR certified ductless mini split systems for residential electric customers. To qualify, the system has to be ENERGY STAR certified and listed in the AHRI database, and your application has to go in within 90 days of installation. JEA allows up to two rebates per product type per address every seven years.
We’ll tell you upfront whether the system we’re quoting qualifies, and we’ll give you the AHRI certificate and itemized invoice you need for the application. Rebate terms are set by JEA and can change — confirm current details at jea.com before you count on it.
Mini split repair and maintenance

We service mini splits too, not just install them — including brands we didn’t put in. Common calls:
- Not cooling, or cooling weakly — often low refrigerant from a line-set leak, or a filthy blower wheel
- Water dripping from the indoor unit — nearly always a clogged condensate drain line. Very common here.
- Musty smell when it kicks on — biological growth on the coil and blower wheel. Needs a real deep clean, not a spray can.
- Error codes on the remote or unit — communication faults between indoor and outdoor units
- Outdoor unit runs, indoor unit doesn’t (or vice versa)
Mini splits need their filters rinsed monthly and a professional coil and blower cleaning annually. They have less filtration than a ducted system, so the indoor coil loads up faster than people expect. Skipping this is the number one reason mini splits underperform after year three.

Common questions
How much does a ductless mini split cost in Jacksonville?
It depends on the size of the space, how many zones you need, and how difficult the install is — a straight shot through an exterior wall costs a lot less than a long line set run around a house. We give firm quotes after seeing the space, not phone estimates that change on install day. Call us at 904-467-1100 and we’ll come look.
Can one mini split cool my whole house?
Usually not well. Mini splits shine at cooling specific zones. A multi-zone system can serve several rooms from one outdoor unit, but if you’re conditioning a whole home, a central system is often the better value. We’ll tell you which one your house actually calls for.
Do mini splits heat as well as cool?
Yes — they’re heat pumps and they run in reverse for heat. In Jacksonville’s climate they handle winter heating easily and far more efficiently than electric strip heat.
How long does installation take?
A single-zone install is typically one day. Multi-zone systems take longer depending on line-set routing.
Are they loud?
The indoor unit is quieter than a refrigerator. The outdoor unit is noticeably quieter than a conventional condenser. This is a real advantage if the unit sits near a bedroom window or a neighbor’s property line.
Will it work in my uninsulated garage?
It’ll work, but it’ll work hard, and you’ll pay for that in your power bill. Insulating the garage door first makes a huge difference. We’ll be straight with you about what to expect.
Do you service mini splits you didn’t install?
Yes.
