Why this happens in Florida

Long seasons, heavy humidity, hard starts

A Northeast Florida cooling season is long, and the system runs for hours on hot afternoons. Every start puts stress on the capacitor, contactor and compressor, and parts that sit in a hot outdoor cabinet wear out faster.

Humidity adds a second job. Your AC pulls a lot of water out of the air, and that water has to drain. When algae clogs the drain line, the pan overflows or a float switch shuts the system off.

Most breakdowns give a warning first: longer run times, a humming outdoor unit, a damp spot near the air handler. Calling at the first sign usually means a smaller repair.

Before the visit

What to do safely while you wait

If the breaker tripped: Reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off. Repeated resets force a struggling compressor to keep trying to start.

If there is ice on the lines or indoor coil: Turn cooling off and set the fan to On so the ice melts. Check the filter. Don’t chip at the ice, because the coil and tubing are easy to puncture.

If water is coming through the ceiling: Turn the system off at the thermostat and put a bucket under the drip. If water is near a light fixture, switch that circuit off at the panel.

If you smell burning: Turn the system off at the thermostat and the breaker. If you see smoke or flame, leave the house and call 911.

In the meantime, close the blinds on the sunny side, run ceiling fans, and keep older family members, infants and pets in the coolest room.

What we check

The readings we show you

  • Supply voltage and amp draw on the compressor and fan motor, compared to the nameplate
  • Capacitor value in microfarads against its rating, and the condition of the contactor
  • Refrigerant pressures with superheat and subcooling, to confirm or rule out a leak
  • Condensate drain, pan and float switch
  • Static pressure, filter and coil condition, for airflow problems that freeze coils

You see the numbers and what they mean before anything is replaced.

How the job runs

Call, measure, then a written quote

1

Call first

Call (904) 467-1100 and say what you see: no cooling, water, a tripped breaker or a smell, and who is home. Tell us if there is active water, a burning smell, or someone in the home who is vulnerable to heat. After hours or on Sunday, request a callback or book online.

2

Measured diagnosis

The diagnostic fee is $129 for homes, waived if you go ahead with a recommended repair over $250. Commercial is $149, waived on repairs over $300.

3

Written quote, then the repair

You get the price in writing before work starts. Financing is available through Synchrony, GreenSky or Wisetack.

Straight answers

Common questions

Do you offer 24/7 emergency AC service?

No. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 8 AM to 8 PM. If your AC fails outside those hours, follow the safety steps on this page and request a callback or book online.

Should I keep resetting the breaker if my AC keeps tripping it?

Reset it once at most. If it trips again, leave it off and call, because repeated restarts can damage the compressor.

What should I do if water is coming through the ceiling under my air handler?

Turn the system off at the thermostat, catch the water in a bucket, and switch off the circuit for any wet light fixture. A clogged condensate drain is the usual cause.

How much does an urgent AC visit cost?

The residential diagnostic fee is $129, waived if you go ahead with a recommended repair over $250. You get a written quote before any repair work starts.
