Commercial Refrigeration
When the evaporator coil packs with ice, air stops moving and the freezer warms up while the compressor keeps running. Gary Sharpe, the licensed contractor who owns Langston’s, tests the defrost system part by part and quotes the fix in writing.
At a glance
Why this happens in Florida
Every time the freezer door opens, humid outdoor or kitchen air comes in with it. In a Florida summer that air carries a lot of water, and inside a freezer it ends up as frost on the coil, the ceiling and the door frame.
The defrost system has to melt that frost off the coil on schedule and get the water out of the box before it refreezes. If one heater, the timer or the termination control fails, the frost stays and builds into solid ice.
Meanwhile the condensing unit is rejecting heat into hot air for much of the year. A box that is already fighting ice has little capacity left to spare.
What we check
Please do not chip ice off the coil with a knife or screwdriver. It is easy to puncture a tube and turn a defrost repair into a refrigerant leak repair. Gary is EPA Section 608 Universal certified for any refrigerant work.
How the job runs
Call (904) 467-1100 or book online, Monday through Saturday, 8 AM to 8 PM. Tell us the temperature you are reading and what changed.
The commercial diagnostic is $149. Gary forces a defrost, meters each heater and control, and shows you which part failed.
You get a written quote before any work starts. Approve a repair over $300 and the $149 diagnostic is waived.

Usually a defrost part has failed: a heater element, the defrost timer or controller, or the termination control. A frozen drain line or air leaking in at the door can also cause ice to build faster than defrost can clear it.
A failed door frame heater lets the gasket freeze to the frame. A door that is hard to open right after closing can point to a blocked or failed pressure relief vent, if your box has one.
A manual thaw may get you running for a day or two, but the ice will come back if a defrost part has failed. Move product to another freezer first, and avoid chipping ice off the coil.
The commercial diagnostic is $149, waived if you approve a repair over $300. You get a written quote before any work starts.
