Quick facts
Local conditions
The Westside is a big, loosely defined stretch west of downtown, with established neighborhoods near the river and a lot of open, undeveloped land farther out. Cedar Hills, along the Cedar River, filled in mostly during the 1940s and 1950s with more than 3,000 brick or concrete block ranch houses. Lake Shore added mid-century homes in the early 1950s next to postwar frame, brick and stucco bungalows.
Many of those houses went up before central air was standard in new construction, which did not happen until the late 1960s. So a lot of Westside ductwork was added later, and short attic runs, a single return that is too small for the system, or connections that have loosened over the decades are all fair game. A high static pressure reading usually tells that story before anyone climbs into the attic.
Block walls also soak up afternoon sun and keep releasing that heat into the evening, so a system may still be running hard well after sunset. Closer to the river, Murray Hill was laid out in 1907 and much of Ortega dates to around the turn of the 20th century, which brings its own set of retrofit questions.

Concrete block and brick absorb heat all afternoon and give it back for hours, so the AC keeps working into the evening. Leaky or undersized ducts make that worse, and a static pressure test will show whether airflow is part of the problem.
