Walk-in freezer icing up?
A failed defrost can cost you the whole box

When the evaporator coil packs with ice, air stops moving and the freezer warms up while the compressor keeps running. Gary Sharpe, the licensed contractor who owns Langston’s, tests the defrost system part by part and quotes the fix in writing.

Walk-in freezer problems, in short

SignsIce on the evaporator coil, frost on the ceiling, a door that freezes shut, or ice under the coil.
Usual causeA defrost heater, timer or termination problem, a frozen drain line, or air leaking in at the door.
Typical visitDefrost cycle tested, heaters metered, refrigeration readings taken, then a written quote.
When to callWhen ice starts building on the coil or the box will not hold its normal setpoint.

Why this happens in Florida

Humid air turns into ice

Every time the freezer door opens, humid outdoor or kitchen air comes in with it. In a Florida summer that air carries a lot of water, and inside a freezer it ends up as frost on the coil, the ceiling and the door frame.

The defrost system has to melt that frost off the coil on schedule and get the water out of the box before it refreezes. If one heater, the timer or the termination control fails, the frost stays and builds into solid ice.

Meanwhile the condensing unit is rejecting heat into hot air for much of the year. A box that is already fighting ice has little capacity left to spare.

What we check

The defrost system, piece by piece

  • Defrost heaters: resistance and amp draw on each element, since one dead element leaves part of the coil iced.
  • Defrost timer or controller: how many defrosts run per day, how long each lasts, and the fail-safe time.
  • Defrost termination: whether the termination thermostat or sensor ends defrost once the coil is clear, not too early or too late.
  • Fan delay: evaporator fans should stay off after defrost until the coil is cold again, so they do not blow water and heat into the box.
  • Drain line heater and pan: the heated drain must stay warm along its full run inside the box and slope to drain.
  • Door frame heater, gaskets, closer and the pressure relief vent if your box has one.
  • Suction and head pressures, superheat, subcooling and compressor amp draw.
  • Box temperature against your setpoint. Most walk-in freezers run at 0°F or colder.

Please do not chip ice off the coil with a knife or screwdriver. It is easy to puncture a tube and turn a defrost repair into a refrigerant leak repair. Gary is EPA Section 608 Universal certified for any refrigerant work.

How the job runs

Three steps, no surprises

1

Call or book

Call (904) 467-1100 or book online, Monday through Saturday, 8 AM to 8 PM. Tell us the temperature you are reading and what changed.

2

Measured diagnosis

The commercial diagnostic is $149. Gary forces a defrost, meters each heater and control, and shows you which part failed.

3

Written quote, then the repair

You get a written quote before any work starts. Approve a repair over $300 and the $149 diagnostic is waived.

Straight answers

Common questions

Why does my walk-in freezer coil keep icing up?

Usually a defrost part has failed: a heater element, the defrost timer or controller, or the termination control. A frozen drain line or air leaking in at the door can also cause ice to build faster than defrost can clear it.

Why does my freezer door freeze shut or get hard to open?

A failed door frame heater lets the gasket freeze to the frame. A door that is hard to open right after closing can point to a blocked or failed pressure relief vent, if your box has one.

Can I just let the ice melt and restart the freezer?

A manual thaw may get you running for a day or two, but the ice will come back if a defrost part has failed. Move product to another freezer first, and avoid chipping ice off the coil.

How much does a walk-in freezer service call cost?

The commercial diagnostic is $149, waived if you approve a repair over $300. You get a written quote before any work starts.
